08/05/12 Partner Volunteering Scheme - Waitrose

Following a survey which shows almost 70%* of people in the UK don’t do any type of volunteering at all, Waitrose has launched a Partner Volunteering scheme. The scheme which will see all 277 of its branches donate 250 hours (100 for convenience stores) of employees’ time to local charities and good causes each year, meaning a total of 75,000 hours will be donated across the branches.

It has been designed to enable Waitrose Partners (as all employees are known) to take time out of their day-to-day job roles to give back to their local community - this could include supporting local good causes and charities with a project they may otherwise be unable to complete, or passing on their valuable skills to make a tangible difference. The type of support given could include:

  • Transforming a woodland or garden for hospice or hospital patients to enjoy.
  • Sharing retail and customer service skills with a local charity shop.
  • Supporting a local litter pick to benefit the local environment.

The initiative, designed to further Waitrose commitment to supporting the communities where it trades, is also being rolled out to the supermarket’s head office and distribution centres, meaning its Partners will spend a total of 75,000 hours volunteering all over the UK and Channel Islands in 2012 - equivalent to 40 full time job roles.
The supermarket hopes it will also provide Partners with the opportunity to develop new skills which they can apply within their own working or personal lives.

Kevin Garrett, Community Projects at Waitrose said: We’ve always aimed to be part of the community we serve, not just by the way we interact with our customers daily, but through schemes like Community Matters, which give something tangible to those who need it most - and this week we take this commitment one step further with the launch of Partner Volunteering. As a democratic business it couldn’t be more fitting that we are launching this exciting new initiative to allow our Partners to make choices about how they give something back to the communities they live and work in.

A wide variety of causes are poised to benefit from the scheme from charity shops, animal shelters and nursing homes to schools, gardening projects and sports teams.
