04/06/10 Celebrating Surrey Festival - Surrey County Council

Thousands of festival-goers are expected to flock to see more than 4,000 performers at the Celebrating Surrey event this month.

The festival organised by Surrey County Council showcases the best music, dance, arts, food and drink Surrey has to offer at Loseley Park, Guildford, on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 June.

It includes:

  • The final of the Surrey's Got Talent competition being judged by PR guru Max Clifford
  • Workshops and performances from over 32 dance companies and schools, including Gleich Contemporary Ballet from Woking and Guildford's Theatretrain
  • Theatre performances from the likes of Guildford-based Powerhouse Theatre Company and schools, including Christ's College, Guildford County School and Sandfield Primary School
  • Over 60 hours of music including jazz, classical, world rumba and percussion, including Redhill Intrada, Reigate String Orchestra and The Orpheus Centre, Godstone
  • Free print-making, calligraphy, sculpting, music and dance workshops from the likes of the Woking Chinese Association, Esher's Richenda Court and Leatherhead's Fire and Iron Gallery
  • Life size artwork to step inside, from labyrinths made of grass to giant bubbles made by artist Janetka Platun and young people from Epsom.

Denise Saliagopoulos, Surrey County Council Cabinet Member for Community Services, said: "This will be a fantastic event, showcasing Surrey's huge array of talent and celebrating its rich history and culture. As well as the impressive line-up of artists and musicians, Max Clifford will be among the judges uncovering a new star performer in the Surrey's Got Talent competition. I'm hoping thousands of people come along to enjoy this extravaganza."

Surrey's Got Talent aims to find the county's hidden stars, from singers and dancers to acrobats and jugglers, and the first prize is £1,000, courtesy of Eagle Radio. Over 2,000 people voted for 10 performers to take part in the final. The judges are PR guru Max Clifford, Eagle Radio breakfast show presenter Peter Gordon, artistic director of the StopGAP Dance Company Vicki Baalam and the chief editor of Surrey Life magazine Caroline Harrap.

Festival tickets cost £10 for adults and £4.50 for children. Concessions and weekend tickets are available. Children under the age of five get in free. Book tickets in advance to save money. Go to www.surreycc.gov.uk/celebratingsurrey or call 01483 444 334.
