20/05/10 Surrey Arts - Outstanding service

A Surrey County Council service that provides music lessons to more than 10,000 pupils every week has been rated outstanding.

Surrey Arts provides an "outstanding service with strong leadership" and gives "value for money", according to a review by the Federation of Music Services.

Surrey County Council Cabinet Member for Community Services Denise Saliagopolous, said: "As we push on with our drive to be a world class organisation, it is hugely satisfying that our music service is held in such high regard. This rating places us alongside the very best performers in England and Wales and is a strong reflection of the outstanding efforts of our staff."

James Thomas' review summary said: "Surrey Arts (SA) is a forward looking, outstanding service with a strong leadership and senior management team who have a shared vision of SA becoming a world class service which offers high quality musical experiences to the children, young people and the communities of Surrey."

The review was carried out in March and April this year as part of an assessment of all local authority music services in England and Wales.
